Today’s heightened concern over global political, military, and economic instability is evident, as multiple regions face escalating tensions and conflicts. This instability raises serious issues, including food insecurity, supply chain disruptions, and shortages of medicines. Regrettably, the question is not if this instability will affect us, but rather when it will do so.
The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine continues to have severe geopolitical impacts such as global fertilizer shortages and an icreased strain on the defense logistics agencys need to supply medicine and medical supplies. The medical supply shortage hit wa too close to home while attending a routine doctor appointment. My doctor had to use a much larger needle than usual to draw blood. She told me that her office was forced to utilize what was on hand due to a medical supply shortage.
Venezuela remains in a deep political and economic crisis, made worse by continued hyperinflation, shortages of essential goods, and political unrest after the recent “election” of President Nicolas Maduro. Once the richest economy in Latin America, Venezuala started experiencing an economic decline due to poor governance and hyperinflation.
Haiti is grappling with gang control over more than 80% of its capital, Port-au-Prince. The issue has persisted since March 2024. Shortly thereafter, the citizens of Haiti began to suffer from food insecurity as violent gangs imposed their version of martial law. The United Kingdom is no stranger to civil unrest and political instability. Violent protests continue to underscore the tensions between political factions over refugees and perceived governmental distrust. Despite the alarming nature of these examples, we haven’t even mentioned the ongoing conflict in the Middle East involving Israel, Iran, and their proxies, or the potential for political unrest with our upcoming Presidential election. While these situations are complex and troubling, it’s possible to take the necessary steps toward preparedness.
